When you first move out you can’t afford a huge place, so your first apartment may be pretty small. But there are ways that you can decorate that may help the apartment to look a bit bigger.

In a lot of these types of apartments the bedroom is the same room as the living room. These are the perfect examples of where you can use either a sleeper sofa, or even a nice futon. There are many sizes that you can buy so no matter how small the room you should be able to find a piece of furniture that will work as both a place for friends to sit, and your bed at night.

Most people have computers so another purchase you will need is that of a desk to place your computer on. Try and get a desk that is small but will also fit your full computer on. If needed you can always place a shelf on the wall for your printer, just make sure it fits fine. With some of these desks you may even have extra storage for books.

To help diminish the noise level you can also place an area rug in the room under the table or at the edge of the chairs. Rugs come in all shapes, sizes and colors these days and it will help keep the floors warmer in the winter, especially if you are looking at hardwood floors or maybe the carpet is just worn and you want to cover up the spot. Area rugs are very good at hiding worn spots or high traffic areas.

If you have a smaller kitchen see if you can get a table that you can fold into the wall or up on the wall when you’re not using it. Get a couple of chairs that fold up and can be placed away or that guests can use to sit in.

You can still decorate your place and make it look fabulous even if it’s smaller. Don’t worry it won’t be your home for the rest of your life, and you can wait until you can afford more to decorate exactly how you may want too. Don’t forget to check out not only second hand stores, but garage sales in the neighborhood too. You never know what you might find that will look great in your new apartment.

If you have a smaller place before you head out to look for furniture you should really measure and see just how big of items you can purchase. There is nothing worse than purchasing a piece of furniture that takes up the whole room. This alone will make your apartment look super small. Check out what may be a bit smaller or that can work as more than one piece of furniture. Like the futon or sofa bed that can be used in more than one way. Don’t forget that when you place an item that is too big into a smaller room it will make the space look cramped.
